James Cameron and Paramount aim to set the second highest-grossing film of all time back in the position of first highest-grossing with a 15 year anniversary re-release of Titanic, and this time it’s 3D. The movie, a love story set against the tragic sinking of the ambitious ocean-liner, stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winselt. It ran in theaters for nine months, spending an astonishing 26 weeks in the top 10, and 15 of those weeks at number 1.
The movie stood as the highest-grossing film until it was topped by Cameron’s Avatar, which didn’t have as impressive a stay on the charts, but was bolstered by the higher ticket prices commanded by the newly-refined 3D technology. It makes sense to combine the successes with this revisitation, though Titanic 3D will have to make about $160 million to retake the #1 spot.
