Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling have been offered plum roles in director Ruben Fleisher’s Gangster Squad from Warner Bros. Penn would lay Mickey Cohen while Gosling is playing one of his law-enforcement antagonists. Will Beall wrote the script. []

Ben Macintyre has sold the film rights  to his novel Operation Mincemeat to Cohen Media Group. The fact-based book focuses on a scheme to bamboozle Nazis through a scheme involving a corpse carrying false invasion documents. [Risky Business]

Bryan Cranston may land the villain role in Columbia Pictures’ remake of Total Recall from director Len Wiseman. Colin Farrell has the lead role. Neal Moritz is producing. []

Sam Claflin, Caleb Landry-Jones and James Frecheville are reading for the male lead and Imogen Poots, Felicity Jones, Alicia Vikander, Gabrielle Wild and Dianna Agron are pursuing the female lead  in Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros’ fantasy yarn The Seventh Son. Jennifer Garner‘s just-announced Miss Marple upgrade may not happen after all. Chorion, who holds the rights to Agatha Christie’s character says news that Disney had obtained the rights to the character as a vehicle for Garner to star and produce is premature. Word is that Christie would never have approved of a radical change to the character. []

Todd Levin will make his feature directing debut on New Artists Alliance and Caliber Media Co’s Static. Milo Ventimiglia and Sarah Shahi star in the 3D supernatural thriller. [Variety (Paywall)]

Ridley Scott is looking to direct a biopic about Gertrude Bell. Jeffrey Caine is writing the script. Scott and Giannina Facio are producing. []

John Travolta will star as John Gotti Sr. in director Nick Cassavetes’ film Gotti: Three Generations. Leo Rossi wrote the script about Gotti, his son and the crime family they oversaw. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Kelly Fremon will make her directing debut on her spec script Besties which she sold to James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films. Teen comedy focuses on two high-school girls, best friends until dates the other’s older brother. []

Geoffrey Rush will provide the voice for the CGI character Tomar Re in Warner Bros Green Lantern movie. Other talk places the bass-voiced Michael Clarke Duncan as the voice of another prominent CG figure, Kilowog. The movie arrives in theaters June 17th. []
