Malcolm Gladwell has stepped up to do a rewrite on David Arata script for the Disney feature Hexum. Film focuses on a discredited CIA analyst who has uncovered a global plot by a shadowy mastermind. Gladwell will also score an executive producer credit.  [Deadline.com]

Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger will write the script for the board game based Candyland for Universal Pictures and director Kevin Lima. [Heat Vision]

Stuart Beattie is set to both write and direct the comic-based I, Frankenstein for Lakeshore Entertainment. Film recasts Mary Shelley’s monster as a noir detective. The comic was created by Underworld creator Kevin Grevioux under his Darkstorm Studios banner. [Heat Vision]

Chris Pine will return to Star Trek before he reboots Paramount Pictures’ Jack Ryan franchise. Steve Zaillian, who worked on past Ryan flicks, was due to write the reboot, but recently dropped out so the project is seeking a new writer. Jack Bender of Lost fame will direct when the project goes forward. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing. Tom Clancy’s character has appeared in four movies played by three different actors (Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck). The long-awaited Trek sequel is set to roll this fall for a June 29, 2010 release date. [Deadline.com]

Thomas McDonell will play the young version of Johnny Depp’s Barnabas Collins character in Warner Bros’ Dark Shadows upgrade. Tim Burton is directing a cast that also includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Bella Heathcoate, Jackie Earle Haley and Eva Green. Helena Bonham Carter and Michael Sheen are also said to be in talks. Jennifer Garner will play a sexy young Miss Marple for Walt Disney Pictures. Past depictions of Agatha Christie’s detective have always focused on her as a mystery-solving old spinster. Garner is producing with Juliana Janes. [Deadline.com]

Teresa Palmer is circling the female lead in Summit Entertainment’s zombie romance Warm Bodies with director Jonathan Levine. Nicholas Hoult is set to star as the heartsick shambling undead who falls for Palmer’s still-living character. Project is based on an upcoming novel by Isaac Marion. [Heat Vision]

Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka are close to selling their spec script Meet the New Boss to Chernin Entertainment. James Bobin may direct. Story focuses on a worker whose terrible new boss happens to be a robot. [Deadline.com]

Sarah Gadon will star in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis opposite Robert Pattinson. Cronenberg wrote the script from Don DeLillo’s novel. Story focuses on a financial wizard whose dealings leave him hunted by an assassin. [Deadline.com]
